Chapter Twenty One

Eleanor

I didn't know what to say. I hadn't been nervous like this since I was sixteen years old and asking my first crush to go to prom with me. Every time I saw Mac my hands started sweating, and yet I couldn't take my eyes off her.

“It's only dinner,” I muttered to myself.

But it seemed like so much more than that. It was much more than that. It was an admission that I wanted more, an admission that I was ready to do this, that I was over Addie, that I was ready to test out my shaky judgment on someone else.

Which didn't make things any easier.

It was a slow night at the restaurant. Any restaurant owner will tell you that Tuesdays are the worst night of the week, and this was no exception. There was a steady trickle of customers, but no rush. I kept a corner table at the back, ostensibly getting some paperwork done but in reality waiting for Mac to be alone, waiting for my opportunity.

“You're here late.” Addie sat down on one of the ridiculously fragile chairs.

“Getting the accounts done, keeping an eye on things,” I said, without looking up from my laptop.

She sniffed so I looked at her. The restaurant was close to empty by now, though it wasn't even ten.

“You can get out of here, if you want?” I tried.

She grinned at me. “You don't mind?”

“Place is empty, feel free.”

“It's just that Paul has this party and...”

I waved my hand. “Not a problem. Get on out of here.”

To be fair to her, Addie did tend to spend the most time in the restaurant, working bar, chatting, closing up.

I waited until she was gone, until the last table had paid and Kayla had flipped the sign on the door. The tables were cleared and the cleaners would be in in the early morning. No reason to stick around.

“Off you go,” I told Kayla. “Take an early night for once.”

I wandered back in the kitchen where the staff were busy wiping down surfaces. Mac was there, her back to me, hands in soapy water. Again with the sweating hands. Christ. I took a deep breath. How should I go about this?

“Mac, can I have a word please?”

I made it sound as formal as possible. Too much so maybe, because she looked up in surprise, then shrugged, wiping her hands dry on an apron before pulling the apron off and following me into the office.

I closed the door.

“Yes?”

I cleared my throat. “I, uh, that is, I—”

And she was already closing the space between us.

In the end, I had to say nothing.

Mac

I had to try this. That was what Mia was right about. Whether I could go straight or not, it didn't really matter. What mattered was that if I didn't pursue this, if I didn't do what my body was telling me I needed to, then I was going to regret it.

I liked Eleanor.

I more than liked her.

And when she called me into the office I thought I was being reprimanded or fired or something else terrible.
